Case Study - School Parking Finder

Spot was commissioned by the City of Parramatta to create an online, interactive resource to help improve pedestrian safety, ease congestion and increase compliance to parking restrictions around school zones.

Take a look at the School Parking Finder here.

Spot's innovative asset collection and interpretation technology was repurposed to produce a time dynamic visualisation of the parking restrictions around schools.

Initially a pilot of 21 schools within the jurisdiction of the City of Parramatta were selected.  Following the success of this pilot, the project was expanded to include a further 37 schools.

The School Parking Finder has been developed from the outset as an easily scaleable and inexpensive solution to the problems faced at schools the world over during pick up and drop off times.

Research from Europe revealed that 30% to 50% of child pedestrian crashes involved visual obstacles – usually parked cars where children are emerging unsighted to cross the road (Child pedestrian's exposure, accidents and behaviour – Van der Molen). No stopping zones are well thought out and positioned in such a way as to maximise visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. Increased fines and demerits in active school zones were introduced to act as a deterrent to ignoring parking rules, however not everyone obeys these rules.

The School Parking Finder dashboard leverages our data collection technology and allows time dynamic visualisation of parking restrictions.  New parents can easily familiarise themselves with the restrictions around their children’s schools, and plan their journey appropriately.

Forward PlaNning

The School Parking Finder is designed to be used by new parents as part of an on-boarding process and can be accessed on desktop and mobile devices.

The intuitive control panel allows drivers to forward plan, selecting any day of the week and any time during the 24hrs.  Along with the simple 3 colour legend, it is easy to interrogate the parking conditions in advance of a journey.
