University Street Parking in Sydney

Sydney universities often encourage their students and staff to use public transport, walk or cycle into university. Although all these options are great, sometimes driving to uni is the most convenient option and Spot is here to help.

Universities in Sydney like The University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, The University of Notre Dame and University of New South Wales do not offer a lot of parking on campus, and if they do it is very expensive. Other parking options around these universities include parking at nearby parking stations which can be a $20 flat rate but that can quickly add up if you use it a few times a week. Metered street parking is not better, as prices can be as expensive as $7.20 per hour.

So with the new semester starting, we thought it would be helpful to show uni-goers the best places to find parking near uni, especially when there is free parking on the streets near campus. Check out our Sydney Parking Finder to find your next parking spot for uni:

The University of Sydney - Camperdown/ Darlington Campus

The University of Sydney is located across Camperdown and Darlington, and is walking distance from Redfern train station, where a lot of students make the journey to uni down Abercrombie Street. You can find quite a bit of free parking in the streets of Darlington that range from one hour, two hours and even all day parking. Chippendale is also a great option for parking as it is just a quick walk through Victoria Park to Fisher Library and only a short walk to Cleveland Street and Shepherd Street.

University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)

UTS spreads across Haymarket and Ultimo. Although, Haymarket and Ultimo do not offer a lot of free parking, there is some paid parking in these areas. However, if you are in Building 11 and Building 10 for your classes and do not mind a bit of a walk, there is free parking on MacArthur Street next to the International Grammar School Sydney. Chippendale is the best option for free parking, near the University of Notre Dame you can find free parking ranging from 1 hour to all day parking.

The University of Notre Dame

Located in Chippendale, the University of Notre Dame has some hidden gems when it comes to free parking. The leafy streets of Chippendale offer a mix of paid and free parking with free spots ranging from 1 hour to all day parking. Abercrombie Street acts as a divide between free parking and paid parking, where you will find paid parking behind Central Park Mall for $4.90 per hour between 8am - 6pm and $2.90 per hour from 6pm - 10pm.

University of New South Wales (UNSW)

Getting to UNSW in Randwick has often been considered a struggle by many uni-goers. The main form of public transport for UNSW has been buses but there is soon to be a light rail option. Parking in nearby suburbs is also an alternative answer to avoiding the long lines to getting on the bus. Coogee offers many streets of free parking for the whole day, where it is only a short walk to the bus stop to get on the 370, 316, 317, 400 to get to campus. These streets are also a great place for Coogee Beach parking.

How to Find Free Parking in Sydney CBD

Sydney CBD Parking Sign

Attempting to find cheap or free parking on the streets of the Sydney CBD is often considered pointless.

High prices combined with the time-consuming task of scanning the streets to find on-street parking is an exercise that many drivers would be unfortunately familiar with. While councils usually discourage parking in the city, public transport is struggling to keep up with the growing number of visitors to the CBD.

Street parking rates
Many streets in the Sydney CBD are often exclusively reserved for loading zones during the work week. When there is street parking available, it’s usually $7.20 per hour for a maximum of 2 hours during work hours (8am - 6pm), and then 4 hours maximum after 6pm at $3.90 per hour. The off-peak rate of $3.90 also applies on weekends.

But don’t lose hope.

You can find free parking in the CBD if you know where to look. With the help of Spot Parking you’ll know where all the hidden parking spots are in the Sydney CBD.
